Chili pepper is the protagonist in all pre-Columbian civilizations. Among the Aztecs, the Mayans and the Incas it is a plant believed to be sacred and also used as a currency. In Europe the chili pepper arrived thanks to Christopher Columbus. The Genoese navigator discovered it during his first trip and talks about it, in a travel report dated January 15th, 1493.
